About The Cost of Home

Last updated

The Cost of Home answers one question for American households: what does this part of running a home actually cost, and is it worth it?

Who writes this site?

I'm Marcos Salles, and I write and edit every page here. I lived in the United States for five years. Like most people there, I kept running into the same questions: how big will the electric bill get in summer, what does it cost to replace a water heater, is a heat pump cheaper to run than a furnace? The answers online were often vague, outdated or written to sell something.

This site is my attempt to answer those questions properly, with numbers you can trace back to where they came from.

What will you find here?

Guides on the costs of a home in the U.S.: energy bills, heating and cooling, solar, big repairs and appliances. Each guide gives a direct answer at the top, then the numbers behind it, broken down by state or by situation when the data allows.

How are the articles made?

I start from public data, mostly from U.S. government agencies such as the Energy Information Administration (EIA), Energy Star and the Department of Energy. I use AI tools to help with research and first drafts. Before anything is published, I check every figure against the original source myself, and every article lists those sources at the end so you can check them too.

When the underlying data is updated, the article is updated and the date at the top changes. A page that only had a design or code change keeps its date. You can read the full method on the How we research costs page.

How is the site paid for?

The Cost of Home may show ads served by Google. Advertisers never choose topics, review articles or influence the numbers. There are no sponsored posts and no paid placements.
